2007 Tower Award Winner

A dynamic community member, Mrs. Urquhart was elected President of the Harbour View Citizens Association some 13 years ago, and she has been an ardent champion and advocate for environmental and social redress in the community. Ever dignified, but persistent in her demands, she has waged a relentless battle with the authorities for the restoration of the sewage plant which was once a model community facility. She has also maintained dialogue with the Caribbean Cement Company to mitigate the dust nuisance resulting from the Company’s operations.

Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Urquhart on receiving the
2009 Tower Award.

On meeting Beryl Claire Urquhart, one is instantly struck by her outward calm and dignity – a demeanour that belies the strength of character of this distinguished teacher, administrator, church and community worker, who has given yeoman’s service to education in Jamaica for 40 years.

Described by her students and her peers as “an ideal teacher,” Beryl Urquhart stands tall… not only physically, but also professionally, as a mentor for the thousands of students who have come under her influence. As a teacher at the Chetolah Park Primary School and at the all-male Kingston College, where she became the first female Vice-Principal in 1982, her firm and commanding, yet motherly and always dignified stature, earned the respect of the entire school community… students, teachers, parents and ancillary staff.

At the Overseas Examinations Office (OEO), where she served as Director, following her retirement from the classroom, Beryl Urquhart’s knowledge of the educational system and vast experience as an administrator, as well as her insistence on integrity in administering examinations for the over 90,000 candidates served by the OEO annually, significantly enhanced the credibility of the organization.

The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), the National Water Commission, the National Environmental and Protection Agency (NEPA), the Airports Authority and the National Works Agency (NWA) are just some of the organisations that she has brought into the community in her continued effort to improve conditions for the residents.

She was also responsible for the upgrading of the “Independence Park” on Martello Drive where the Citizens Association hosts the annual Independence Flag-raising Ceremony. She is currently focussing attention on the development of the Aqua Avenue Park, the establishment of a Community Centre and the identification of a formal marketplace for the many vendors who ply their trade on the streets surrounding the Shopping Centre.

The consummate educator, she started a homework programme at the Harbour View Branch Library where retired teachers could volunteer on selected afternoons to help students. Mrs. Urquhart is also co-ordinator of the Library and Chairman of both the St. Boniface Early Childhood Development Centre and the Harbour View Primary School.

This active member of the St. Boniface Anglican Church in Harbour View, is a true testimony of her deep religious faith and personal philosophy: “If I can do anything to help anyone, then my living would not be in vain.” When you need a sympathetic ear, Beryl Urquhart is always there to share your personal problems and your joys, and to lend a helping hand. She serves several organizations in the Church, including the Church Committee, the Music Workshop and the Bible Study and Prayer Circle. She has an enduring passion for the welfare of the elderly and the young, demonstrated by her involvement in Church and community outreach projects such as the Sunshine Caregivers, the group of Church volunteers which she has mobilized to assist members of the community who need material, spiritual and emotional support.

A member of the Christian Auxiliary Movement and the Retired Teachers’ Association, Beryl, affectionately known as Faye, is always on the go.

A woman of unquestionable integrity and a Jamaican who is committed to nation-building, Beryl Claire Urquhart was appointed a Lay Magistrate in 2005. Always accommodating, she is often called on at various times of the day and night to act in her official capacity. Despite her hectic schedule, this mother of two and grandmother of two girls and twin boys continues to serve graciously, with her characteristic smile and words of counsel.

Well-known for her no-nonsense, yet amiable disposition, Beryl Claire Urquhart is an achiever, community leader, mentor, mother and friend to many… truly a treasure of the Harbour View community.

President Sydney Masters.jpg
Mr. Sydney Masters

SYDNEY "Presi" MASTERS THE SOFT-SPOKEN PIONEER OF HVFC!

Modest in his demeanor, resolute in his convictions, the quite giant was always present to lend his invaluable advice
to any and all situations relevant to the sport of football and life in general, always emphasizing a disciplined
 approach.

A man who stood for no-nonsense was strident in his commitment to lead a fledgling Club to the realms of
professionalism by dint of ones personal resolve to pull yourselves up by your own bootstraps into the new world of international recognition through high level performances continually.

Bold in his vision from the late sixties as we entered the early 1970’s when the newly developed community of  Harbour View was just experiencing its first decade of existence.
Already the community youngsters had organized themselves somewhat and
showed the positive signs that these talented players could achieve by themselves entering and reaching
the 1969 Summer finals of the then Desnoes and Geddes (D&G) Minor League Under 16 competition against Pembroke Hall.

He jumped in head-first to assist, guide and help to form an official group
to become a formal administration as
Treasurer along with Carvel Stewart, adding to Terrence Slater, Ronald “Piggy” Chung as Manager,
Vin Blaine as President and Ewan “Shanny” Hayles, elder brother of “DV” and a few other football loving individuals in the community like Patrick Brissett, Vincent Besley, Michael Pennycooke, Michael Jureidini and Neville Jolly plus many others.

On March 4th, 1974 the official Annual General Meeting voted in the new body
as the name was changed formally to the Harbour View Football Club,
when Vin Blaine migrated sometime after President Masters was installed.

On Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at the Harbour View Stadium we honored President Masters
along with Carvel and Vin as the  “Three Wise-men from the East”
who  has shepherded this flock into the promised land, still active some 35 years later.

Unfortunately it was at that game against Meadhaven United that we were informed
he was just rushed to the hospital and could not attend, he recovered soon after but was again admitted two weeks later to the University Hospital in the Tony Thwaites Wing.

His single-minded commitment to his late wife Eynid, who passed away last year,
the only football Club he was active within, KSAFA Committees and INSPORTS where he served voluntarily,
as well as his community all are testament to the cause he believed in.

His many decades with Grace Kennedy Company Limited was his real devotion to the company he revered as the epitome of the corporate giant of Jamaican institutions in how they lead the sector, developed an international brand and exported professionally to show the world the true magnitude of how rich the Jamaican culture, tradition through proper organization can conquer new frontiers whenever given the opportunity to excel.

We will miss your guiding light, spirit and sharp corrections when all is not perfect.

The Harbour View Football Club, Staff and Community expresses our sincerest Condolences to his family, friends and the entire football fraternity is much richer for his timeless contribution.

May your soul rest in peace perpetually.

 ” One Love, Come-on-the-View!”

Mr. Sydney McFarlane

Sydney McFarlane was born in Kingston some 47 years ago into a large family dominated by boys, and lived for many years at the family home at Seven Miles, Bull Bay immediately after exiting the eastern section of the Harbour View community.

He was always deeply immersed into the Harbour View community through his beloved sport of football through the Minor League Under 16 Team and at the Corner League level in the powerful Rocky Park FC.

His family heralds from an early football era where others, like the Stewarts', McLean’s', Mullings', Elliott’s', Bedasse’s and Hayles’ traditionally had a series of brothers constantly dominated the teams.

Sydney was a vital member of the winning 1976 Donald Quarrie Secondary Team who won the first trophy for the school in its early years, serving as a co-captain with the late Linval McKenzie as the newly invented shift-system had two leaders, under the guidance of Principal Neville Peart, the acquired sponsorship of Coca-Cola assigned a new Coach, Michael "Fateye" Thompson to the programme.

He graduated to represent his High School in the Manning Cup at St. Andrew Technical then at the senior level at the Harbour View Football Club in the Major League and National League through the 1980's while launching into a Coaching career since 1980 with successfully leading Bull Bay FC to a 2002-03 title.

Sydney switched his focus to the Youth Teams at Harbour View in 2004 where he won the KSAFA Under 13 Championship, KSAFA Under 15 in 2005 and assisting in the CFU Caribbean Club Championship team in 2007.

An active member of the HVFC Over 35 years Masters team still in competition and the Coaching Staff for the 60-100 eager kids in our FREE beginners HVFC "First-Kickers" Program that explodes every Saturday morning at the Compound with keen parents in attendance, this is Sydney's greatest contribution to the community.

Undaunted in his spirit of giving, he has stood firmly behind the organization leadership, and playing in the St. Benedict's Marching Band who volunteers for all civic and festive functions throughout the community and lending their invaluable service to ceremonies islandwide thus exposing and generating earnings for youngsters through new life changing experiences.

The little man with a big heart continues to serve his community while many others have stopped, he finds the will to give more and more of himself selfishly.
